DIY Mermaid Costume

Friday, November 2, 2012

Halloween was super fun this year!  Usually Lilly shys away from people, but she actually got her own candies!  And the costume was adorbs. I love a good handmade Halloween costume, and in Lilly's 3 Halloween costumes thus far, she's been a sheep with her 2 cousins as Bo Peep and another sheep, Olivia the pig, and this year she was an ombre mermaid. Super cute. I think this year was my favorite so far!  I made this during the Hurricane Sandy in the 2 days before Halloween (I like to procrastinate) with a lot of felt. Instead of the typical shiny sequins, we went with a light pink/hot pink/raspberry combo, and I totally lurved it.

Introducing, the cutest mermaid EVER:

The scalloped part was the simplest, since it was just a muslin rectangle with an elastic casing at the top, left open at the back to allow for her room to run and move, and I used ribbons to tie it closed when we went out for the candies. The scallops are just cut in strips from felt, and sewn onto the muslin.

I added her sea shells by hand, along with the top layer of pink to hide the casing, with some ribbon straps.

The tail piece with the fins, was the most time consuming. Her fins are made like a tutu with tulle knotted onto elastic which was then hand sewn onto the sides of the bodice, while the tail comes to a point in the center.

And the starfish headband...

Incredibly cute for dress up later too! Oh, and a crab candy bag. Ha!

A few throwback costumes, just for my enjoyment...

2011: Olivia
2010: 2 sheep. Bo Peep was too busy for a photo op.

For the record, this is how she really felt about the costume.
Oh! For the big news!!
Drumroll....

Almost a year in the making, with a little help from Pregnitude and the greatest doctor ever. Now we totally have to move. Which is why I haven't updated this blog in like, forever, because I've been feeling like garbage. Thanks for not noticing! :)
