Mustache & Lips Pacifier Clip Tutorial

Tuesday, April 9, 2013

I put together a little pacifier clip tutorial for you guys.  I made the first mustache pacifier clip for a friend who just had a little boy, which you can read about in my New Mom Comfort Gift Bag post. When I had Lilly, I had this super cute owl clip I purchased from someone on Etsy, and since I'm due again, I figured I'd just make a pair, since we don't know the sex again. A lot of you mentioned that I should add these to my Etsy shop, so I'm going to do that too!

My beef with these types of pacifier clips, is this: when it's not universal, it's annoying. Lillian used all the kinds of pacifiers without the little handles... so I had to rig the super cute owl clip to fit each pacifier, from cutting a slit in the Soothie to removing the snap altogether and using a piece of elastic to wrap through. If I'd have thought the engineering though, I probably would've just opted for the universal-type clips in the first place!

This time around, I'm doing just that. These cute clips just loop through to attach the pacifier to the clip, and it'll fit most brands as long as there's a spot to loop the ribbon through. Let's make a few, shall we?

You'll need:

  • felt
  • scissors
  • hot glue
  • ribbon
  • pins
  • mustache and/or lip shapes
  • clips (I used ID badge clips, but you can use suspender clips too)
To start, you'll want to cut out the shape of lips & mustache you like. I went with a pretty standard looking mustache, and pouty lips. Cut 2 from your felt, to give it some body. Unless you have stiffer felt, then you can go with just one.

Glue these 2 layers together with some hot glue, and set aside.

Cut your ribbon into a 10" strip. The ribbon itself will end up being about 8" to 8 1/2" long when finished. To keep your ribbon from fraying, take a lighter or match and gently singe the ends to bind them off.

Loop the ribbon through the clip about 1" and pin. At the bottom of the ribbon, make another loop, about 1 1/2" - 2" and pin. If you want a bigger loop on the end and a smaller on the metal clip, you can adjust.

Secure the ends by adding a little bead of hot glue and press tightly. Now that your ribbon is attached to the clip, you'll add some hot glue to the top of the metal clip, and attach your felt cuteness!
